Projects That Make New York City a Sustainable Smart City

As one of the most iconic cities in the world, it is no surprise that New York is embracing sustainable development and smart city technology. New York is showing the world how sustainability can co-exist with progress, from renewable energy to green initiatives.

The city has committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and providing financial incentives and penalties to encourage businesses to become more energy efficient. 1. Big Data analytics – The use of data and analytics has been increasing throughout the years, and New York has harnessed its power for traffic flow optimization and infrastructure improvement.
2. Autonomous Vehicles – Self-driving vehicles have recently become one of the most talked-about technologies in the world, and New York is no different. There are multiple projects underway in the city to test self-driving cars on its streets.
3. Advanced Communication Networks – Through its comprehensive network of interconnected communication devices, New York has provided citizens with enhanced access to services such as healthcare, shelter and transportation.

6. Local Law 97 - This law will go into effect in 2024 when all buildings must report their carbon emissions. Buildings that exceed the carbon cap will have to pay the city significant fines. This incentive will push NYC building owners to upgrade their property technology to include smart HVAC system and other IoT devices and building management solutions.
